Chateau La Lagune

Built in 1715, the Chateau La Lagune is more than one of the most illustrious wine estates in Bordeaux. It also has a notable history of dynamic women winemakers. In 1964, Madame Jeanne Boyle became estate manager of this venerable property and took decisive action. She replanted the entire vineyard so that the rows would be spaced at a distance that would insure higher quality. She also earned recognition as the first woman cellar master in Bordeaux.

Today the wines are made by

Caroline Frey, Winemaker

Paz Espejo, Cordier's chief winemaker, Madrid-born and a graduate from Bordeaux in enology, still finds that the level of responsibility delegated to males in the wine industry is higher than for women.  "I really think that female sensitivity and capacity for wine appreciation and perception is different than male ones. That is why I really believe that a woman can 'connect' and speak about what she feels better than a man when she is communicating with other women."

Sally Johnson, winemaker for Pride Mountain Vineyards. She says many of the women who graduated with her from the famous Viticulture and Enology Department at the University of California at Davis are accomplished winemakers today.

Mia Klein, owner and winemaker Selene.  She began this label with the intension of producing distinctive wines from single vineyard locations and has been successful in doing just that. After an internship at Chappellet Vineyard and earning her Enology degree from UC Davis.
